The legal minimum tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6mm. Without an adequate amount of tread depth your tyres may not be bale to perform properly in wet conditions, you should always really replace your tyres before they reach the legal minimum. To add to this you follow a risk of up to £2,500 in fines and three penalty point for each illegal tyre on your vehicle should you be stopped for it.
The 20P Test
A nice easy way to be able to check if your tyre tread exceeds the minimum depth is by doing the 20p test.
Take a 20p coin and place it into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is placed, then your tread is above the legal limit. However, if the outer band is visible then your tyres could be considered unsafe and illegal which could lead to legal problems should you be stopped.
Should your tyres tread be at an illegal limit you should immediately contact a tyre professional such as members of staff in our tyre bay team. We can check your tread as well as replace your tyres should it be necessary. At Hills Salvage we quality check every tyre that enters our stores so you know you will be receiving a quality part worn tyre.
